St. John Baptist de La Salle founds the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Reims, France — pioneering free education for the children of the poor in their native language.

Since 1680, the Brothers of the Christian Schools have dedicated their lives to giving a human and Christian education to the young — especially the poor — across Africa and the world.
Our Mission →
Our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, gave a new meaning to the school by making it accessible to the poor and offering it to all as a sign of the Kingdom and means of salvation.
The Christian school is the preferred field for the activity of the Brothers and Lasallian Colleagues. But our Institute also explores other possibilities for education more adapted to the needs of time and place.
Where We Are →Integrating Catholic values, personal relationships, and academic excellence in every classroom.
Scholarships, San Miguel Schools, and programmes ensuring quality education for those with limited means.
A dedicated teaching community providing continuity, professional support, and Lasallian spirit.

Pope Benedict XIII grants formal approval of the Institute through a Papal Bull — establishing the Brothers as a recognised congregation of the Catholic Church.
The Brothers minister together with over 73,000 lay colleagues to more than 900,000 students in 80 countries — including five nations in the Lwanga District of Africa.
The Lwanga District is one part of a global network of Brothers, educators, and communities united in the mission of De La Salle.
